Barese
Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla
Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla
25 to 30 days — 'Barese' chard matures exceptionally early and produces large yields. Its leaves are glossy and dark green, with slightly curled edges. Intended to be harvested when the leaves are at the "baby" stage, but can be left to grow larger as well. Especially good when used fresh in salads, or lightly steamed.
We do not know a lot about the history of this Italian chard variety except that is was named after the Provincia di Bari, once a province in the Apulia region of southeastern Italy. Each packet contains one gram, which can vary from 30 to 50 seeds.
